Narragansett Bay Commission Field’s Point WWTF Project

Mission

The Narragansett Bay Commission (NBC) is a nonprofit public utility that owns and operates the two largest wastewater treatment facilities (WWTF) in the state of Rhode Island. Wastewater treatment operations are energy intensive, and in an effort to improve energy use performance and help establish a sustainable energy management plan for the future, NBC decided to integrate wind energy generation at their Field’s Point WWTF.

Solution

Goldwind Americas supplied three GW87 1.5 MW wind turbines to directly supply electricity to the Field’s Point facility behind the meter. The Goldwind turbines are uniquely suited for distributed generation projects due to the reliable permanent magnet direct-drive technology that minimizes lifecycle maintenance costs to the consumer. The installation was completed in October 2012, and the project outpaced expectations in the first year of operations, generating greater than 40% of the Field’s Point WWTF energy requirements. This amounts to approximately $1 million in savings on their electric bill annually.

Goldwind Americas continues to provide NBC with a long-term service maintenance and warranty package designed to ensure the project operates at high availability levels.

The Field’s Point Wind Project is part of a broader energy solutions program that Goldwind Americas and other companies are partnering on to help large-scale electricity consumers achieve their cost saving and sustainability objectives.
